From May 19th to 21st, 2023, the international community will convene in Hiroshima, Japan, for the G7 Summit. If you are planning to attending the summit and desire an efficient mode of transportation, flying to Hiroshima by business jet is the optimal choice.

Visa

Visa requirements may vary depending on nationality and duration of stay. Find out if you need a visa here. As a government official attending the G7 Summit, you may be eligible for special diplomatic or official visas. Coordinate with your country’s embassy or consulate in Japan to understand the visa requirements and process for government officials attending the summit.

Airports

Hiroshima Airport (HIJ/RJOA)

The primary airport serving Hiroshima is Hiroshima Airport, located approximately 50 kilometers east of the city center and takes 55 minutes travel time from central Hiroshima.

There are restrictions between 17 to 23 May, 2023. RJOA is closed except for government state/chartered flights arranged through diplomatic channels.

RJOA operating hours run from 07:30 to 22:30 LT. Slots are required for all arrivals and departures. No PPR is required.

Kansai International Airport (KIX/RJBB)

The approximate distance between Kansai International Airport (RJBB) and central Hiroshima city is 375 kilometers (233 miles) by road or rail. If you choose to travel by the Shinkansen bullet train, the journey time from Hiroshima Station to Shin-Osaka Station, the nearest Shinkansen station to Kansai International Airport, is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

RJBB operates around the clock, offering continuous service with 24/7 customs, immigration, and quarantine (CIQ) facilities. Slots are required for arrival and departure. Slot tolerance at RJBB is between 00-59 of each hour. No PPR is required.

Between 17 and 24 May 2023, due to overnight parking arrangements for government state/chartered flights at RJBB:

  • The potential for general aviation (GA) operations at RJBB during this period will be confirmed closer to the start date, allowing for timely planning.
  • Based on parking availability, there may be occasional relocations of aircraft to different parking positions.

EBACE 2023

Business leaders, manufacturers, government officials and business aviation professionals will soon gather at Geneva’s Palexpo for European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (EBACE) on 23-25 May 2023. For all private aviation professionals, it’s the perfect event to learn about the latest advances in private aviation.
EBACE 2023 is a leading event focused on shaping the future of on-demand aviation. The event provides a platform for discussions on sustainability efforts and ideas that are driving the industry towards carbon neutrality by 2050. Attendees can engage with companies leading the way in future flight, explore cutting-edge technologies and innovations, and connect with clients and talent. The event also features presentations from industry experts discussing the big ideas that will shape the future of the industry.

Visit Jetex at EBACE

Jetex has been a major part of EBACE for many years and we invite you to be the first to discover our latest news and announcements at the event.

EBACE Location and Venue

Palexpo is Geneva’s biggest exhibition and convention center, conveniently located adjacent to both Geneva International Airport and the city’s rail station. The venue is also easily accessible by motorway from the rest of Switzerland, as well as from France, Germany, and Italy. On-site parking is available for 2,800 vehicles.

EBACE2023 Program Schedule

As well as the many exhibits and static aircraft displays, attendees can join a variety of Keynote speeches, panelist discussions and networking events throughout the event. You can find out more about the program and timings at the schedule here.

Flying to Geneva

Geneva Airport (IATA: GVA, ICAO: LSGG) is the main international airport serving Geneva. LSGG functions as an Airport of Entry (AoE) and offers a full range of General Aviation (GA) support services and ground handling equipment for business aircraft. The airport operates from 04:00 – 00:00 local time, seven days a week. Take offs and landings of non-commercial flights are allowed at Geneva Airport between 06:00 and 22:00. The airport is usually busy throughout the day. As there is only one runway, delays can sometimes occur due to inclement weather. However, this should not be an issue during the month of May, when conditions are generally favourable.

During EBACE, some of the parking areas normally used by general aviation will be restricted due to the static aircraft display. As a result, overnight parking may be limited during the event period.

Alternative Airports

Alternate airports which can be used for repositioning include Lyon–Saint Exupéry Airport (IATA: LYS, ICAO: LFLL)Zürich Airport (IATA: ZRH, ICAO: LSZH) and Basel Mulhouse Freiburg (IATA: MLH, ICAO: LFSB). All function as AoEs and offer a full complement of GA support services. However, due to their relatively long distances from the EBACE venue (140km, 280km, and 255km respectively), Geneva Airport remains the best available option. In order to guarantee your spot, it is recommended to ensure that all permits, slots, and permissions are arranged well in advance.

Landing permits for Switzerland

Swiss landing permits are mandatory only for charter (non-scheduled commercial) flights. Private non-revenue flights do not require landing permits. Documents which need to be submitted with the permit application include the plane’s airworthiness and registration certificates, air operator certificate (AOC), and insurance details. The official lead time is five working days, although permits are usually processed within two or three days.

Airport Slots & PPR

Slots are issued in 19-minute blocks, with all timings strictly enforced. Once the request has been approved, a confirmation number will be provided which should be entered in the remarks section of the flight plan. Prior Permission Required (PPR) is not usually required at LSGG, however, due to heavy traffic must be obtained during the EBACE period and other business conventions.

Fuel Uplift

VAT is applied on fuel sales in Switzerland. Enroll in our VAT exemption program today and experience the benefits of VAT-free fuel service. For further details, please contact vat@jetex.com.

Customs & Immigration

Customs and immigration are cleared within the general aviation terminal at LSGG and is usually a fast and straightforward process. Passports of passengers and crew must have a remaining validity of at least six months. Visas may be required, depending on nationality. There are no visas on arrival in Switzerland, so they must be arranged prior to departure.

Hotels

Hotels in Geneva charge premium rates with stricter cancellation policies during EBACE, with four-star accommodation starting from CHF 300 per night. Contact Jetex travel to discuss your EBACE hotel requirements.

Arrange Your Trip with Jetex

Our dedicated operations team is available 24/7 to look after all the technical details of your journey, allowing you to relax and focus on the purpose of your Geneva visit.

This year, World Economic Forum 2023 is resuming its normal location and dates, following several years that were impacted by the pandemic. The event will once again be held in person in Switzerland, between January 16th – 20th, 2023, under the theme “Cooperation in a Fragmented World” to address the world’s most pressing global challenges and with confidence in its ability to drive forward-looking solutions.

If you are planning to operate to Switzerland for the event, take note of the following information to ensure efficient operations all throughout.

  1. Visa

Visa requirements may vary depending on nationality and duration of stay. Find out if you need a visa here. Third-country nationals planning for a short stay that does not exceed 90 days, in any period of 180 days, must have travel documents that are still valid at least three months after their intended date of departure from Switzerland. The documents should have been issued within the previous 10 years.

  1. Airport Options

Samedan Airport [SMV, LSZS]

For private flights, the best airport option is Samedan Airport, a dedicated private aviation airport located in the Engadin valley of Switzerland.

Also known as Engadin Airport, SMV/LSZS is about 65 kilometers away from Davos and therefore the closest airport to the World Economic Forum venue. Samedan Airport is also the highest elevated airport in Europe; its unique geographical location features challenging topography, winds and thin air due to its high altitude.

LSZS operating hours run from 0800 to 1900 LT daily in the summer, and 0800 LT to sunset during winter. Slots are confirmed with Prior Permission Required (PPR). Overnight parking can be arranged on a first come, first served basis due to limited parking availability. In case overnight parking is not available, a quick turnaround can be arranged.

If you are flying to Samedan Airport to attend WEF 2023, Jetex can take care of all your private flight arrangements.

Zurich International Airport [ZRH, LSZH]

Zurich International Airport is the preferred airport for most WEF attendees. The biggest and busiest airport in Switzerland, ZRH/LSZH provides convenient access to downtown Zurich and other major cities.

Slots and Airport Restrictions in Zurich Airport:

  • Curfew for private flights covers 2200 to 0600 LT.
  • Flight plans must precisely match airport slots +/- 0 minutes. Deviations are not permitted.
  • A unique slot number (slot ID) is assigned and should be entered in field 18 of the ATC flight plan. Note: Flight plans without a corresponding slot ID will be rejected.
  • If an aircraft will arrive from or depart to a Schengen station, passport control will not be required.
  • As of May 1, 2019, the Swiss Border Control requires submission of General Declaration (GENDEC) before entering Switzerland.
  • Zurich is an Airport Collaborative Decision Making (ACDM) Airport.

Other main airports in Switzerland are Geneva International Airport (GVA, LSGG) and EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL, LSZM, MLH, EAP).

Geneva Airport, unofficially known as Cointrin Airport, is conveniently located in the city center, while LSZM (also referred to as EuroAirport) is situated about seven kilometers northwest of Basel city center.

  1. Fuel

Requesting a fuel release prior to arrival is highly recommended to prevent delays on fuel delivery.
To get a fuel quotation, please contact fueldispatch@jetex.com.

  1. Ground Handling

Handling is mandatory in Samedan, Zurich and Geneva airports. Jetex provides ground handling to any aircraft in Samedan, Zurich, Geneva and EuroAirport through our network of partners.

For non-commercial flights in Geneva, the return of the aircraft, after exiting the security restricted access area to the public area, is only possible with a handling agent. It can be performed without a handling agent, only if the pilot holds a valid Airport Identification Card (CIA) or a valid Crew Member Certificate (CMC) – both must be duly validated by Geneva Airport Authorities. Flight crew license is not accepted.

NOTE: Cancellation of flights to Samedan should be submitted 24 hours before arrival.

  1. Ground Transportation

Ground transportation generally includes airport shuttles, transfers and authorized taxis. Jetex can arrange luxury cars, vans, and big buses for both crew and passengers from and to Samedan, Zurich, Geneva or EuroAirport.

  1. Permits

Foreign air carriers that wish to operate to Switzerland with civil aircraft may need a landing permit, depending on the domicile of the operator and the type of flight. Charter flights, commercial business flights, and scheduled flights that do not qualify for free access to the EU market need to apply for a permit from the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA).

European Union (EU)/European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Air Carriers

In compliance with Regulation (EC) No 1008/2008, foreign air carriers based in member EU or EFTA states do not require a permit for flights between the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland. Cabotage flights within Switzerland are not regulated by the existing bilateral civil aviation agreements and always require a permit. Jetex can arrange your flight permit, if required.

Non-EU/Non-EFTA Air Carriers Charter Flights

Landing permit is mandatory, and application should be submitted not later than 72 hours before the first flight. Jetex can arrange your flight permit, if required.

  1. Security

Switzerland is one of the safest countries in Europe and worldwide. Exercising normal safety precautions is advised.

  1. Hotels

A wide variety of hotels is available in Switzerland, and there are more than 40 official hotels near the WEF venue in Davos. Jetex can arrange your hotel stay in Davos, Zurich, Geneva or anywhere you prefer to stay for the duration of the event. Please contact travel@jetex.com.

  1. Climate

January, the same as December, in Davos, Switzerland, is a freezing cold winter month, with an average temperature varying between -0.2°C (31.6°F) and -9.1°C (15.6°F).

  1. Language

Airports in Switzerland are multilingual, with information available in English, French and German. Common languages spoken are German, French, Italian and Romansh. English is not an official language but used by many, especially for official purposes and documentation.

Plan Your Flight to WEF 2023

The World Economic Forum is a leading annual corporate event where global leaders and industry movers convene to form strategic solutions that aim to improve the state of the world. Business aviation traffic is expected to increase due to the event, so planning your flight in advance is highly recommended.

Jetex can streamline your operations to WEF 2023 and ensure all your flight support requirements are taken care of.

Drone Disruptions

For the second time in a week Singapore’s Changi Airport experienced delays due to unauthorized drone activity. Approximately 15 departures and 3 arrivals were delayed and 7 flights were diverted. The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore has deemed it illegal to fly within 5km of any airport or military airbase, or higher than 200 feet. With the widespread use of drones by the public it’s an ongoing battle for airports and authorities.

New Aircraft Design Concepts

As well as the explosion of new startups for hybrid and fully electric aircraft, there are a growing number of projects that aim to boldly change the efficiency of current aircrafts. These unconventional designs could help to reduce engine noise, shorter take off and landing, minimized weight and reduced drag. Take a look at our blog for some of the concepts from NASA, Onera and Boeing.

Russia Cancels Georgia Flights

Russian news outlets are reporting that they plan to halt flights by Russian carriers to neighboring Georgia from July 8th. The ban comes after Russia reported Georgia failed to pay debts accrued for air navigation services. It’s estimated that 150,000 Russians will have to cancel planned trips to Georgia in the coming months.

This Week’s Why Fly Private

A woman travelling on an Air Canada flight had a rude awakening. She woke up to find herself on the empty darkened plane – and to top things off her phone was dead. She attempted to use the cockpit comms and eventually managed to unlock a cabin door, gaining the attention of ground crew who assisted her off the aircraft. Air Canada have not yet commented on how the woman was left overlooked.

Paris Airshow

As well as celebrating a decade of our Jetex Paris le Bourget location, lots of other exciting announcements were being made during the International Paris Airshow.

The main theme of this year’s show has been sustainability in the industry. Among those pushing boundaries in electric aviation were Airbus and VoltAero Cassio, pushing the boundaries of hybrid and eVTOL engineering with demonstrations throughout the show.

Rolls-Royce have announced plans to acquire Siemen’s eAircraft Business to continue to revolutionize jet travel. The partnership will concentrate on evolving the gas turbine engine, advancing the use of sustainable alternative fuels and electric engines – all to help manage CO2 emissions and aviation sustainability.

The announcement further echoes a joint statement by Airbus, Boeing, Dassault Aviation, Rolls-Royce and United Technologies Corp at the show to cement their commitment to reducing aviation pollution drastically. They pledge to reduce CO2 emissions to half of 2005 levels by 2050 and to limit growth of net CO2 emissions by next year.

The most ambitious project? Check out Zephyr Endless Flight – a solar-powered balloon concept that would no longer require fuel to moderate the direction of travel. It could even take you to the edge of the stratosphere!

Supersonic Air travel?

As well as emerging technologies, the aeronautical industry is in the process of reviving an old one – Supersonic travel. ICAO and the FAA are looking at regulation changes that would permit supersonic travel, 15 years after the Concorde flew for the last time. The changes would affect current rules that restrict supersonic aircraft from flying over-populated areas, due to noise pollution. Companies such as Boom, Spike and Aero are also looking to revolutionize the business to bring supersonic back to the mainstream.

Call for Pilots

CAE, the aviation training specialists have announced a serious of scholarships and programs aimed to encourage potential pilots to join the industry. CAE estimates the civil aviation industry to need over 300,000 new pilots to satisfy growing demand. Their scholarships also aim to bring a more diverse range of applicants into the air.

Rolls Royce Around the World

Rolls Royce and Aeroflot have celebrated a new record – one of their engines has endured 50,000 engine flying hours – without requiring an overhaul. The distance is equivalent to 1,000 round the world trips – or travelling to the moon and back 50 times! The engine entered service in 2008 and has powered an A330 aircraft.

This weeks Why Fly Private

A man traveling from Pittsburgh International Airport on an American Airlines flight to Dallas had to be restrained by crew and passengers with duct tape as he became agitated during the flight. The flight had to make an emergency landing at Oklahoma City, where the passenger was arrested.

Knockout Name

Louisville Airport, Kentucky has a new name, commemorating it’s most famous resident – Muhammad Ali. Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport was unveiled with a new logo on June 6th by Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer and Lonnie Ali, wife of Muhammad Ali. With 3.9 million passengers traveling through the airport each year, it’s a great way to continue the legacy of the heavyweight champion and humanitarian.

Boeing takes to the seas

We’re used to seeing Boeings crossing the skies, but if you’re traveling to Bahrain get ready to see something new – a 70 meter long Boeing 747 sunk in the Persian Gulf. The jet, part of an underwater theme park stretching 100,000 meters off the Bahraini coast is set to open this August. Divers can expect a unique site including art sculptures, with the reef expected to mature over the years. The aircraft has been stripped of all potential pollutants, including wiring and glues to create an inviting and long-lasting environment for marine life.

New Aeronautics Merger

United Technologies and Raytheon have agreed a merger that will see a $74 billion powerhouse that will bring together aircraft engines, parts, avionics, interiors, missiles and cyber technology. The union will aim to reduce Research and Development costs, develop cyber protection for connected aircraft and artificial intelligence for commercial travel. The new company will be known as Raytheon Technologies Corporation.

Vista Global Holdings Expands

Vista Global Holdings (VGH), group owner of VistaJet, Vista Lease, XOJET’s and now Jetsmarter has completed its acquisition of the per-seat charter broker and app. The merger aims to bring the Jetsmarter technology to all aspects of Vista companies. The deal, first announced in April and now passed by competition watchdogs is set to widen Vista’s access to an estimated $11 billion on-demand private charter market.

Big Data in Aviation

The Internet of Things has shaped the consumer world and now it’s starting to influence businesses, including aviation. Described as the ‘Industrial Internet of Things’, the idea is based on the power of smart machines collecting real time data and analytics to help improve inefficiencies in a business. With the help of Honeywell, Cathay Pacific reduced delays and cancellations by 30%. Collecting data from 1.6m flight records and 13,000 APU reports, they were able to create a predictive model that forecast parts failing up to 3 days before failure.

This week’s Why Fly Private

Another reason to travel private – this week a flight leaving Manchester Airport in the UK was delayed by 8 hours when a passenger mistook the emergency door for the toilet door, triggering the emergency evacuation slide. The Pakistan International Airways flight arrived in Islamabad seven hours late and caused further delays to other flights leaving Manchester Airport.
