Lynden Pindling International Airport is your main gateway to Bahamas. Photo of Nassau by Fernando Jorge on Unsplash

Nassau, Bahamas is a destination everyone needs to see and visit at least once in their life. Situated in the northwestern West Indies, The Bahamas has become one of the world’s foremost vacation resorts with the capital, Nassau, being the island nation’s commercial hub. For business jet operators, Nassau serves as a great tech stop location.

If you’re planning to operate to Nassau, then here’s what you should know:

1. Main Airport

Lynden Pindling International Airport

[IATA: NAS, ICAO: MYNN]

The airports in the Bahamas are very well connected, making it one of the best nations to visit, especially during the peak season months of December through February. The main port of entry is at Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport (MYNN).

Formerly known as Nassau International Airport, MYNN is the largest airport in the Bahamas and the primary international gateway into the nation. Located in Nassau on the island of New Providence, the airport is located about 10 miles west of Nassau’s city center. Control tower and airport operating hours are 24 hours; however, Bahamas Customs and Immigration hours operate from 0900 to 1700L on weekdays only.

Alternative Airports

Alternative airports to MYNN include Grand Bahama International (MYGF) located in Freeport and Leonard M. Thompson International Airport (MYAM) located in Marsh Harbour. There are also several domestic airports; however, prior to operating, it is best to confirm ahead of time the airport conditions and availability of ground handling services. There are no landing fees or tie-down fees for single engine private planes under 6,000 lbs. at any government-owned airport. Fees may apply at private airports, such as MYGF.

Parking

Aircraft parking can be a concern, especially during high season. If parking is needed, request will need to be received as soon as possible to ensure availability.

Slots

Airport slots are not required.

PPRs

PPRs are not required.

NOTE:

Flights to MYGF and MYAM may be restricted or suspended due to Hurricane Dorian aftermath. MYNN was an unaffected area and remains fully operative. Check here for up-to-date information.

2. Handling

Your ground handler will need to be provided with the full schedule, crew and passenger information, operator name, aircraft type and registry, and ground service requirements.

3. Fuel

It is recommended to secure all ground handling and fuel requirements a minimum of 24 hours prior to arrival. While it depends on the demand, expect slight delays during peak season months.

4. Ground Transportation

Nassau transportation services include buses, taxis and chauffeur driven cars available for booking. Transportation to neighboring Bahamian islands can also be coordinated via plane or boat.

5. Permits

Landing permits are necessary for charter operations, but not for private flights. Permits for a single operation require up to four business days. Jetex can efficiently and easily assist and handle all permit requests. During peak season months (December to February), permit requests should be sent as soon as possible to avoid any unprecedented delays.

When applying for annual permits, operators will be given a temporary license that allows unlimited flights on a month-to-month basis while the annual permit is being processed.

Permit Documentation

Documentation requirements include a copy of the registration and airworthiness certificates, insurance certificate, Air Operator’s Certificate, and ad hoc application for a charter permit.

6. Customs & Visas

BA/GA passengers and crew entering the Bahamas are required to obtain three copies of the C7A Bahamas Cruising Permit form, one Bahamas Immigration Card per person, and a valid passport.

MYNN is one of the few Caribbean airports where U.S. pre-clearance is available pre-departure.

A CARICOM APIS filing is not required. For Bahamas entry requirements, see here.

Customs, immigration, and quarantine (CIQ) clearance is normally not required for international tech stops, as long as crew and/or passengers don’t embark or disembark. When operating to secondary airfields, you’ll need to first clear CIQ inbound and outbound at the airport of entry

7. In-Flight Catering

Onboard catering may be permitted to be offloaded, or stored at the airport, but confirmation of these arrangements is highly advised.

8. Hotels

With over 100 resorts in the Nassau region, accommodations are relatively feasible to get on short notice. Accommodation rates range from US $350-1300/nightly, landing on the higher end during peak season (December to March).

9. Security

The U.S. Department of State maintains The Bahamas at a level two travel advisory. While it is safe to travel to the Bahamas, visitors are advised to be vigilant of their surroundings and belongings.

10. Climate Conditions

Yearly temperatures linger between 70°F (21°C) and 80°F (26°C), and while the Bahamas, in general, does not have an off-season, temperatures can slightly vary by location. The weather is relatively warm throughout all four seasons, followed by cooler trade winds during the autumnal months.

Nassau’s peak travel season occurs during the months of December through February, where atmospheric conditions are less humid and muggy. The rainy months of May to November rarely pose a challenge to visitors as rainfall is relatively small. However, the island may be affected during tropical storm season months. Lightweight and breathable attire is highly recommended.

11. Other Factors

  • Cabotage restrictions are not an issue for domestic operations of foreign-registered private or charter aircraft in the Bahamas.
  • English is fluently spoken in the Bahamas.
  • Vaccination advisories can be found here.
  • Pets may be brought into the Bahamas, but the pet must be no less than six months old and have a current health certificate. The animal, within 48 hours of arrival, must be presented to a local veterinarian for examination.
  • For firearms on board, coordinate with ground handler well in advance.

When operating to Nassau, Bahamas during high season, plan diligently ahead to secure fuel availability, resort accommodations and local transportation. The Bahamas is a relatively accessible destination for GA operations.

Every year, Barbados sees more than 2.4 million passengers traveling to and from the island.

Barbados is a very popular destination for business aviation travelers during the high season months of December through February. Every year, however, Barbados sees more than 2.4 million passengers traveling to and from the island, establishing its reputation as an international travel destination and the island of choice in the Caribbean. In fact, visitor spend on the island increased by 7% to US $1.12 billion in 2018.

If you plan to operate to Barbados, here is what you should know:

1. Main Airport

Grantley Adams International Airport

[IATA: BGI, ICAO: TBPB]

Grantley Adams International Airport (TBPB) is the only designated port of entry for GA/BA operators to and from Barbados. Also known as Bridgetown Airport due to its close proximity to the capital, TBPB is one of the busiest airports in the region. Situated in Seawell, Christ Church, TBPB serves as one of the major gateways to the Eastern Caribbean. TBPB airport hours operate 24/7, alongside the Air Control Tower and Customs and Immigration. Peak operations are between 1100-1400L and 1800-2100L. TBPB is a full-service airport with reasonable jet fuel prices and quick turnaround.

Alternative Airports

Alternative airport options include Hewanorra International Airport (TLPL) in Saint Lucia and Argyle International Airport (TVSA) in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, which can serve as gateway airports en route to Barbados.  From St. Lucia and St. Vincent & Grenadines, it is a 40- to 45-minute flight to Barbados. However, runways at TBPB can accommodate larger business jets that alternative regional airports may not be able to hold.

Parking

While aircraft parking is plenty, during the high season it’s best to confirm parking in advance.

Slots

Slots are not required; however, Barbados also serves as a well-positioned tech stop location where aircraft fueling turnaround times are approximately 45 minutes. For peak season operations, additional lead time is recommended to organize ground handling and aircraft parking.

PPRs

PPRs are not required at any of these locations when making international tech stops only.

2. Handling

Turnaround time at each location ranges from 30 to 60 minutes, so it’s best to arrange ground handling in advance. If you need to turn your aircraft very quickly, notify your ground handler ASAP.

Your local ground handler will notify appropriate authorities of your arrival and submit the required information. Take note that a CARICOM APIS filing is required.

3. Fuel

It is recommended that ground handling and fuel requirements are secured a minimum of 48 hours prior to arrival. During high season, expect slight delays in jet fuel delivery. An aircraft information form must be filled out to arrange ground handling in Barbados.

Contact Jetex at itp@jetex.com for fuel release requests. Fueling is available 24 hours, but advance notification is needed between 2230 and 0630 local time and overtime charges apply.

4. Ground Transportation

Destinations within the island are all minutes away by car or public transport from the airport. Bus and taxi options are available from TBPB; however; to truly enjoy your experience in Barbados, the best way to get around is through car service.

With local partners, vehicle services to transport guests safely to and from the airport in maximum comfort can be coordinated.

5. Permits

Landing permits are not necessary for charter flight operations if the aircraft is under ICAO Category B in size. If Category B or larger, a landing permit is required. Emergency medical flights also require landing permits which may be expedited. Overflight permits are not required when traveling through Barbados airspace.

Permit Documentation

Documents, other than passports and visas (when applicable), are not always requested but may include certificates of airworthiness and registration, aircraft logbook, and pilot licenses and medical certificates. Temporary airman certificates are not accepted.

Permit Revisions

Permit revisions are required for changes in Zulu date, origin of flight or aircraft registration. Notification is only necessary for changes to crew and passengers. Permit revisions may be accomplished within a short time during normal Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) hours of 0800-1600L Monday through Friday.

6. Customs & Visas

A CARICOM APIS filing and customs clearance are required for both inbound and outbound flights and must be filed at least 30 minutes pre-departure. Operators who have not completed CARICOM APIS are subject to fines and may be denied entry to Barbados.

Customs clearance and a valid passport are required for crew and passengers. For current visa nationality requirements, check here.

Information required for APIS includes full names of passengers and crew, passport numbers and expiration dates, gender, nationality, and place of birth. Operators who have not completed CARICOM APIS are subject to fines and may be denied entry to Barbados.

Your CARICOM APIS filing will be checked against a no-fly list and customs will confirm that APIS has been completed. Learn more about CARICOM here.

CIQ is cleared within the main terminal, unless an FBO with CIQ facilities is available. Clearance times are normally under 15-20 minutes.  For return to the U.S., CIQ pre-clearance is not available in Barbados.

7. In-Flight Catering

In-flight caterers are available, as well as direct catering from a local hotel or restaurant. Contact your handler a minimum of 24 hours in advance for catering requests.

8. Hotels

Crew accommodation options routinely sell out during peak season. This is particularly true for short notice operations. Resort accommodations are about US $300-900/night with strict cancellation policies, especially during high season.

When arranging high season crew accommodations, it’s important to book as soon as possible and have a contingency plan in place.

9. Security

Although Barbados is generally safer than its Caribbean neighbors, visitors should be cautious of their surroundings, especially at night. However, police are heavily stationed around residential and tourist areas in Barbados.

10. Climate Conditions

The temperature in Barbados does not vary much throughout the year, with an average temperature range of 72°F (22°C) to 88°F (31°C). With a tropical climate, Barbados is relatively warm in the summer months and cooler and more pleasant from December through March. Bring clothing suitable for tropical weather, such as lightweight sportswear and casual suits for business.

Along the coast, annual rainfall amounts to 47-55 inches, while it’s slightly more abundant in the inland areas. Hurricane season from June to November can also affect the island with tropical storm surge and flooding.

11. Other Factors

  • Cabotage is not a major issue in Barbados, and there are currently no NOTAMs or TFRs.
  • English is the official language of the nation, but the Bajan dialect is also spoken.
  • Business hours typically run from 0800-1600L, Monday-Friday, with Wi-Fi availability in hotels and cafes across the island.
  • For vaccination recommendations to Barbados, check here.
  • Traveling with your pet to Barbados is an easy process. For current vaccination and microchip requirements, check here.
  • Entering Barbados with firearms or ammunition without prior express consent from the Barbados government is not permitted.
  • Be aware that arriving aircraft must have cabin sprayed at top of descent with an approved insecticide or fines may apply.

mexico-ramp-checks-international-aircraft

Mexico is implementing random ramp checks on international aircraft operating under Part 91 and Part 135.

Mexico’s Civil Aviation Federal Agency (AFAC) is now planning to perform ramp checks on every international aircraft operating under Part 91 and Part 135 flights to all airports in Mexico. Local handling agents received the instruction from authorities on November 19, 2019.

Amplifying Aircraft Examinations

While this is quite an undertaking to implement, the frequency of apron checks will remarkably increase in the coming months. The Civil Aviation Authority in Mexico (DGAC) became the Civil Aviation Federal Agency (AFAC) in October 2019, and the new authority is implementing stricter regulations to improve the country’s aviation industry.

Required Documents On-Board Flights to Mexico

With ramp checks now firmly expected, here are the recommended documents that should be carried on board during flights to Mexico:

  • Airworthiness Certificate
  • Registration Certificate
  • Pilot’s Licenses
  • Pilot’s Medical Certificates
  • Multiple Entry Authorization (MEA) with corresponding payment receipt

Items such as the maintenance logbook, aircraft radio station license/authorization, the Flight Manual, Noise Certificate, Minimum Equipment List (MEL), Mexican AIP, preflight checklist, Weight and Balance Manifest, Jeppesen Manuals (electronic format) and first aid kit may also be checked.

Note:

If an inbound or outbound flight to Mexico involves overflying the ocean, then a life raft and/or life jackets are required to be on board, according to the type of aircraft.

Part 91 vs. Part 135

For both Part 91 and Part 135 operations, worldwide and/or Mexican Insurance stating “Private” use when flying Part 91 and “Charter” use when flying FAR Part 135 are required; however, both insurances are required for Part 135. If operating Part 91 flights, it is required to present a document that states the purpose of the flight. This may be in the form of a letter that includes the name of the lead passenger and the connection with the aircraft. There must also be a declaration of the relationship of the passengers with the lead passenger. Notarization is not necessary.

For Part 135 operations, the following additional documents are required:

  • Valid Air Operator Certificate (AOC)
  • FAA OST 4507 FORM
  • If possessing a Mexican Indefinite Blanket Permit (IBP), this should be accompanied by the Mexican AOC and the Yearly Verification, along with receipt of payment to be deemed authentic.

The complete list of documents required for ramp checks by AFAC can be found here.

Why All the Inspections?

The AFAC has implemented random ramp checks on all foreign flights as part of a crackdown on illegal charter flights in Mexico from Part 91 operators. There was an outpouring of persistent, periodic ramp checks in Mexico earlier this summer, with officials saying it was initiated to fend off cabotage. Whether operating Private or Charter flights, operators will have to prove before AFAC if their flights are Private or Charter by their countries of origin.

If you’re operating to Mexico anytime soon, make sure you have all the right documents on-board.

Contact Jetex for more up-to-date information, as well as for ground handling and fueling requests. Plan ahead and contact Jetex at info@jetex.com or call +1 305 306 4000.

The idyllic retreat of Rendezvous Bay features a calm seaside scene serenaded by mellow live music at Dune Preserve.

Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport is the main gateway to the beautiful Caribbean island of Anguilla.

The Valley is the national capital of Anguilla, a British territory in the eastern Caribbean Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, and a favorite Caribbean spot for general aviation operators. GA/BA operations to the island during the peak season months of December through March can cause issues such as limited parking, hotels and fuel.

Here is what you should know when operating to Anguilla:

1. Main Airport

Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport

[IATA: AXA, ICAO: TQPF]

Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport (TQPF) is Anguilla’s sole airport of entry and it is located about one mile south from The Valley’s city center. Serving as the nation’s primary gateway, TQPF airport hours are from 1200-2000Z and Air Control Tower hours are from 0645-2200L, with no overtime. Only certain private jets of specific sizes may land at TQPF. Contact your handler for further details.

Alternative Airports

Alternative airport options include Princess Juliana International Airport (TNCM) in St. Maarten and Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (TJSJ) in Puerto Rico, which can serve as gateway airports en route to The Valley.  From St. Maarten, it is just an eight-minute flight to Anguilla, while San Juan is a 50-minute flight to Anguilla.

Parking

Parking spots are limited and usually fill up quickly. While peak season parking may be requested earlier, it will not be confirmed until a few weeks prior to arrival.

Slots

Slots are not required.

PPRs

PPR for aircraft registered in the United Kingdom is not required.

2. Handling

Ground handling support services are mandatory in Anguilla and range from FBOs to handlers working out of small terminal facilities with potential ground support equipment limitations.

3. Fuel

Fuel runs out from time to time; however, this is pre-notified via NOTAM. It is recommended to have enough fuel to make it to an alternative uplift location. Secure ground handling and fuel requirements within a minimum of 48 hours prior to arrival. While it depends on the demand, expect minimal delays from the fueler from December to March.

4. Ground Transportation

There are no buses, trains or other on-island public transportation on Anguilla. For convenience purposes, vehicle services to transport guests comfortably from the airport to accommodations are recommended. Rental car or taxi services can be arranged to be ready at the airport or delivered to your accommodation during your stay. Car or van services to collect and chauffeur you around the island during your stay can also be scheduled.

NOTE:

There is a US $20 to $28 departure tax (depending on transportation method) paid at the point of exit upon leaving Anguilla for your next destination. The departure tax for day trips where you are returning to Anguilla is typically around US $5 to $10.  All taxes and fees are subject to change without notice.

5. Permits

No overflight permits are required for Anguilla. Flight plans should be filed within two hours of origin departure. During peak season (December to March), permit requests should be sent as soon as possible to avoid further delays.

Permit Documentation

Charter operators may need to provide documents such as Air Operator Certificate, worldwide insurance, airworthiness certificate, registration certificate, noise certificate and operational specs.

6. Customs & Visas

A passport valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date, as well as return or onward tickets, are required for all visitors to Anguilla. Be sure to bring your passport with you on any day trips to neighboring islands.

For Anguilla visa information, check here. Anguilla does not require a CARICOM APIS filing. CIQ pre-clearance is not available in Anguilla and customs is cleared within the main terminal.

7. In-flight Catering

In-flight caterers are available, however, there are standard operating procedures to source catering directly from hotels or restaurants.

8. Hotels

Hotel accommodations in Anguilla can book up relatively quickly and range from around US $300 to $2500 per night. Resorts in Anguilla hold stern cancellation policies, especially during peak season.

9. Security

Visitors are warned to be extremely careful when driving, riding a vehicle, or crossing roads on foot as roads vary from good to bad in condition. Anguilla is relatively safe for travelers and visitors should proceed with normal precautions when abroad.

10. Climate Conditions

Anguilla has a year-round tropical climate, with temperatures ranging from the mid 70°F (21°C) to mid 80°F (26°C) throughout all seasons. December through March bring in a slightly cooler period and are the driest months of the year. Wearing tropical clothing, such as breathable linen and sun hats, is advised.

Rainfall the rest of the year is quite irregular, although it rarely reaches high values. Normally, the moderate rainfall period is from August to November during peak hurricane season.

11. Other Factors

  • British English is the island’s official language; however, Anguillan Creole is also commonly spoken.
  • During high tourist season, travelers will find that Anguilla’s business hours are mostly convenient on the weekdays, while most places close early on the weekends.
  • Commercial businesses are generally open Monday through Friday from 0800 to 1700L and on Saturday from 0800 to 1200L.
  • For current vaccination recommendations, visit the CDC Traveler View.
